Cavalry Pin with Scabbard. Pin measures 13.75 OAL ; still shows original finish in the protected areas, weighs 1.9 lbs, and comes with the correct leather scabbard. The scabbard comes with the two straps on the top and bottom. There is an additional top strap that covers the hammer of the pin which is mostly missing. The leather is stamped, “173 BHQ” 173rd Battalion Headquarters or regimental unit/location? Comes with the brass saddle ring, and strap buckles that show some light verdigris that can be wiped off. Many people feel that this scabbard was used by Cavalry soldiers on their Model 1898 Krag Carbines so that they could tie the bayonet down and not have to wear it on their waist and have it bounce around. Others have said that Bannerman, at the turn of the century married these scabbards with the M1898 bayonets because he had a surplus of empty leather scabbards. So then what were these pickets pins used for, they were used to stake your horse in the dirt so that it didn’t run away. You can still see the bayonet and the Scabbard married together. Nice to see the original use of these fine Military pieces. A very nice piece of history with interesting markings that warrant further research.
