ORIGINAL MAUSER 1891/31 ENGINEER CARBINE 1st MODEL BAYONET WITH MATCHING SCABBARD MADE BY W. KIRSCHBAUM SOLINGEN GERMANY, modified; MARKED “RA” (Republica Argentina) on the riccaso; this variant marking is EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND! There are about 7 variant with different markings. Well documented in Bayoneta de la Republica Argentina book and the Argentine Mauser Rifles. This is the 1st model Bayonet/scabbard that was converted from an 1879 rolling Block bayonet in Argentina in 1931 to fit the 1891/31 Engineer Carbine. The original 1879 German made bayonet did not bear the Argentine crest. They were only 5043 Carbines converted to Engineer carbines 1891-31; so there are NOT many of these bayonets around! Specially with the “RA” marking and matching! They were converted by the Argentine automobile maker HAFDASA- Hispano Argentina Fabrica de Automoviles Sociedad Anonima (the same factory that made the Ballester Molina pistol). Modifications to the bayonet included shortening the blade, cutting off the muzzle-ring, and replacing the muzzle-ring with the trapezoidal wedge, which slides into part of the carbine’s barrel bands with bayonet lug mount. The scabbards were shortened by cutting a section out of the middle and brazing the two ends together. The unusual trapezoidal muzzle ring is unique to this bayonet. Good condition, original vintage Argentine Model 1891-31, 1st model. The blade shows the SN in the riccaso on one side and the “RA” marking in a circle on the other side. The rivets on the brass handle are in great condition and the press release button works properly. Scabbard has a matching number with some scattered shallow dents. The throat screw is present. The scabbard fits the bayonet nice and thigh as it should be. Pictures of the book and rifle/rifle mounts for reference only.
