1873 French Chassepot Rifle St. Etienne M1866 Yataghan Sword Bayonet & Scabbard

Antique 1873 French Model 1866 Chassepot Needle-Fire Rifle St. Etienne Yataghan Sword Bayonet & Metal Scabbard (NON-Matching Serial Numbers). Offered here is an antique Model 1866 Yataghan sword bayonet for the Chassepot needle-fire rifle. The M1866 was named after its inventor Antoine Chassepot. This bayonet also fits the M1874 Gras rifle with some minor fitting. Four state arms plants produced these, including Chatellerault, Mutzig, St. This was made by St. Government bayonets are marked on the spine. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good – Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. The guard is securely fastened to the tang. It has light superficial oxidation and very light pitting. The coloring has started to turn a darker patina color. The two (2x) rivets securely fasten the brass grip. They have started to oxidize. The grip has serrations that are mostly distinct. There are some light scrapes and draglines on the rear end “pommel”, plus scratches and impact marks on the sides. The spine, fullers and sides have light scrapes and scratches. There are a few small nicks and dings on the blade edge. Appears to have been sharpened at some time. The tip is intact and comes to a semi-sharp straight point. The finish is in the white with scattered discoloration. The top of the spine is marked Mre d’Armes de St. The right ricasso has proof marks. The left side quillon also has proof marks on the quillon and serial number “M 46727 / M11″. It does NOT match the scabbard. This scabbard is in Good – Very Good condition, considering its age. The frog loop is intact and securely attached to the body. The mouth, body and finial all have light oxidation and pitting. There are a couple light impact marks. The finish has started to turn a dark patina color. The scabbard has the serial number B? 24946 which does NOT match the bayonet. The “B” could be an “H”, it is hard to read. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your French Chassepot needle-nose rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
