Brought to you by CAMARILLO TRADERS specialists in new, used & antique arms, collectible militaria and rustic ephemera. 1880’s – WWI German Mauser Gew 71, Gew 71/84 and Gew 88 Rifles M1871/84 Knife Bayonet & Metal Scabbard. Offered here is an 1880’s Gew 1871/84 bayonet and metal scabbard. These will also mount on the earlier Gew 71 and later Gew 88 rifles. When the Gew 88 came out, the military thought the M1871/84 bayonet was too short so they went back to the longer M1871 bayonets. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good – Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light oxidation and impact marks. The finish was originally in the white, but has turned a darker patina color. The escutcheons securely fasten the grips. They have light tool marks with strong slots. The grip panels have light compressions, draglines and scrapes. The wood has darkened with age. The blade edge has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white, there is some light scattered discoloration. There is a layer of dried cosmoline throughout. The right ricasso is marked with a serial number “1032”. The scabbard is in Fair – Good condition, considering its age and history. The frog stud is securely fastened. The body has impact marks, oxidation and scrapes. Some of the finish remains and has turned to a gray patina color. There are no markings on the scabbard. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Gew 1871/84 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
