CE/WG – Oesterreichsche Waffenfabrik Gesellschaft, Steyr (Austrian State Weapons Manufacturing Company, Steyr). Offered here is a 1880’s – WWI era Austrian M1888 bolt action Mannlicher rifle bayonet and scabbard. In 1888 the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of War approved the new 8mm bolt action rifle. Approximately 53,000 rifles were manufactured. These rifles were converted to accept smokeless rounds in 1890 and the rifles were designated M1888/90 before they eventually started manufacturing the M1890 models. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good – Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. The catch and mortise area have some light oxidation. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light oxidation and scrapes. The rivets securely fasten the wood grip panels. They have light oxidation. The grips have compressions, draglines and feel kind of grainy. They have darkened with age. The spine, sides and fullers have light erosion and scrapes. The blade edge has a few scattered small nicks and dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade has been polished. The left guard is marked with what appears to be an “F”. The right guard is marked with the serial number “87903”. The metal scabbard is in Very Good – Very Good Plus condition considering its age and history. The frog stud is securely attached. The body has light impact marks, oxidation and scrapes. Most of the finish still remains and has turned to a darker gray patina color. The scabbard has no visible markings. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Austrian M1888 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
